Don't worry if you're not all that creative or if your spelling and grammar isn't that crash hot - that is Kelly's department and she excels at it. All you need to bring to the table is some idea of what you want to achieve and Kelly can help you with the rest...
Tip 1: Identify your audience
It's your business so you will most likely know your market better than anyone. Make sure you have a clear idea of the consumers you want to target in which areas.
Tip 2: Determine your purpose
Do you want to increase sales, inform, prompt enquiry or promote a special event? Knowing what you want your marketing to do for you is the key to developing a piece and will determine the tone of copywriting, your choice of images, even the size.
Tip 3: Choose your 'distribution' method
Depending on your audience, your purpose and your budget, you have a wide variety of display or 'distribution' methods to choose from. These include direct mail, letterbox drop, email, newspaper, magazines, signage, newsletters, tourist information centres, etc.
Tip 4: Schedule and plan wisely
Allow as much time as you can to plan, design and produce your piece. Urgent jobs can be accommodated, however it is best to plan ahead to avoid increased costs, snap decisions and rising stress levels!
Tip 5: Develop a sound working relationship with your designer
The closer your relationship with your graphic designer, the more 'in tune' they will be with the way you like things done, who your audience is and your individual expectations. Loyalty extends both ways and a good designer will nurture client relationships.
Tip 6: Be Selective
A good designer will be able to set their mind to almost anything, however, we all have varying skills, specialities, experiences and attitudes. It is just a matter of finding the designer who, firstly, listens to you and is then not afraid to provide you with constructive feedback and advice to help you achieve your outcomes. Be selective, but also keep an open mind...
